The Czech Republic has tested a new amphibious vehicle called KALAN, developed to replace the Soviet PTS model. During the tests, it was compared to the Czech version of the PTS-M, known as the PTS-10.

The project is funded by the Czech Republic’s Technology Agency within the TREND program and focuses on search and rescue operations, cargo and personnel transport, and modular configurations for different missions.

With a Tatra V12 diesel engine, the KALAN reaches up to 60 km/h on roads, 35 km/h in cruise mode, and 12 km/h in water. It measures 10.2 meters in length, 3.3 meters in width, and 3.07 meters in height, weighing 20 tons and supporting up to 9 tons of cargo.

Among its equipment are a container hook system, a winch, a hydraulic arm, and anchoring elements. Additionally, the vehicle can be adapted for military use, including rocket launchers and air defense systems.

Given the threat of flooding, the Czech Republic considers this type of transport essential. In September 2024, it was announced that the Czech army would use its aviation and engineering units for rescue operations and supply missions in flooded areas. At the same time, Poland, also facing flooding, used the PTS-M to evacuate civilians and carry out rescue missions.
